OptiLake - Basic of care for lakes and ponds

AREAS OF APPLICATION

The growth of algae and plants influences important water parameters. Within a very short time, OptiLake creates ideal living conditions for all plants and pond life: The optimization of the carbon dioxide and hydrogen carbonate levels, as well as of the calcium content, is vital for all aquatic life. By adding calcium in the form of carbonate hardness, OptiLake stimulates the healthy growth of flora and fauna. The biological self-purifying power of your pond is immediately activated! By im­proving the water quality, OptiLake stabilizes the ecological equilibrium in your ornamental ponds, swimming lakes, and biotopes. OptiLake is particularly useful when dealing with toxic substances, such as ammonia, nitrites, and heavy metals as well as poorly growing plants and weakened fish. As a positive side effect, OptiLake reduces the corrosion of pumps and pipes.

 

EFFECT

OptiLake adds vital calcium and carbon dioxide to the water. The increased carbonate hardness (KH) level acts as a buffer, which provides your biotope with consistent pH-values between 7.5 and 8.3 (diminished fluctuation in pH-value). pH-values above 8.3, or strong fluctuations in pH-value, put a strain on both animals and plants. OptiLake creates optimal living conditions for the flora and fauna, and increases the water's self-purifying power. In addition, the use of OptiLake supports the growth and reproduction of micro-organisms feeding on algae (e.g. daphnia and rotatoria). Purifying micro-organisms benefit from the optimal conditions in the pond and in the filters.

APPLICATION

a)Method of Application
OptiLake is to be spread evenly over the entire pond surface, without dissolving it in water beforehand. After application, the water clouds over for a short period of time, which is a desired side effect. The yellow stains on the plants, resulting from direct contact with the powder, will quickly disappear. Filter systems and other equipment may remain in operation during application.

b) Dosage
100 g OptiLake for 1000 litres (= 1 cubic metre) of water. However, sometimes a higher dose is recommended. This is the case if, in the early evening hours, the pH-value is above 9.5 and/or the KH-level is below 5 °dH. For the determination of both pH-value and KH-level, use the AquaCheck-Set from the Lavaris Lake product range. The test results and the tables enclosed with the kit enable you to determine precisely the required dosage.

c)Ideal Time of Application
OptiLake can be used in all seasons. However, treatment with OptiLake is particularly important in spring and summer, when the biological equilibrium of the water is at the greatest risk.


IMPORTANT NOTE

a) Diminished Effect
If there is a permanent source of acid or lye in the water, OptiLake has to act constantly as a neutralizer and is thus consumed more quickly. Once it has been completely used up, the pH-value is no longer stable. Certain kinds of concrete and cement, which are sometimes used as building materials in the construction of ponds, may constantly release lye into the water. This can increase the pH-value considerably. To counteract the bloom of algae, we recommend AlgoClear prior to using OptiLake. Note: OptiLake is water-soluble.With every water exchange, OptiLake is partly removed and no longer remains active.

b) Interactions with Other Products
From the Lavaris Lake product range:
The simultaneous use of AlgoClear and OptiLake is not recommended. OptiLake should be used either one day before or after AlgoClear. All other products from the Lavaris Lake range can be used at the same time as OptiLake. To our knowledge there is no adverse reaction.

Other pond treatments:

Should the water – after treatment with OptiLake – cloud over or turn brown for a longer period of time, this effect is probably the result of prior use of peat, humus, or other water purification treatments. In certain cases, the clouding or colouring may be neutralized by using OxyActive from the Lavaris Lake product range.

c) Caution

If – after the application of other pond treatments – the pH-value remains consistently high, OptiLake, unless used in excessively high doses, can usually not achieve an improvement alone. In this case, both pH-value and KH-value should be checked with the KH-test from the Lavaris Lake AquaCheck-Set. The instructions enclosed enable you to determine the quantity of pH-Minus necessary to bring down the pH-value. Once this has been achieved, the pH-value needs then to be stabilized with OptiLake, following the enclosed instructions. Please refrain from using any powder products containing gypsum, as it does not dissolve well in water and penetrates the sediment. Once in the sediment, gypsum may be broken down into hydrogen sulphide (smell of foul eggs), which is highly toxic and can seriously damage the biotope.

d) Contra-indications
OptiLake should not be used in isolation in lakes where thread algae are in full bloom. This product improves the living conditions of all pond life, and thus promotes the growth of thread algae even further. In this case, we recommend the use of the Lavaris Lake products AlgoLon® (only to fight thread algae) and/or AlgoClear prior to an application of OptiLake. SeDox is also an effective, additional way to combat algae growth.
